A tariff is the way you get charged for your energy. You can save money immediately by ensuring you're on the best tariff and if possible, shifting some of your usage to a time of day when energy is cheaper.

GreenPower option from your electricity retailer - it is often the easiest and least expensive way to purchase electricity from renewable sources. Your energy retailer will replace the same amount of energy from renewable sources that would otherwise have been sourced from fossil fuels such as coal. You can choose what percentage (10 – 100%) of your electricity account you would like to offset by GreenPower.
Tips for choosing the right energy deal
Energy Made Easy lets you compare the energy offers available in your area. As well as the price, you can see details of contract length and other features of the offer.
Whether using Energy Made Easy or talking to an energy retailer or salesperson, here are some questions to help you work out whether an offer is right for you:
- Can the retailer put up prices of electricity and gas during the life of your contact? Are prices increases planned? How and when will they let you know?
- Does the contract have a set time period? What happens at the end of this period?
- Under some contracts, discounts and other benefits expire, while the contract keeps going.
- Will you have to pay a fee for leaving the contract early?
- Are there late payment fees or any other costs you need to know about?
- Do the conditions of any discounts suit you? For instance, an offer with a large pay on time discount may not work out to be the cheapest option if you ever have to pay late.
- Does the offer suit the way you use electricity? For example, does it have lower off-peak rates at times you use more electricity?
- Does the retailer offer flexible payment options, such as direct debit payments?
- Does the retailer offer useful extras, such as free household energy audits?
Before you switch
- Check with your current retailer if you will have to pay extra fees for ending your current contract
- Remember: a 10-day 'cooling off' period applies to all energy contracts, meaning you can change your mind and end the contract without cost during this time.
Before you agree to enter any energy contract, you should be given an Energy Price Fact Sheet that provides key details about the contract, including:
- Name of the contract and the retailer selling the contract
- Tariff rates - including the unit price you will pay in cents per kWh for electricity and cents per MJ for gas and any fixed or standing charge in cents per day
- All fees - including any account establishment fees, exit fees, late payment fees, disconnection fees, reconnection fees and payment processing fees
- All discounts and rebates - including conditional discounts, for example only if you pay on time, and non-conditional discounts that apply to the contract.
